The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition and fatty acids profile present in Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) northern population as a function of fish size and fishing area (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). Samples were collected during the northern stock assessment cruise of the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) carried out on board of FRV Capitán Oca Balda in Spring 2008 (OB-02/2008). The fishing trawls were performed between 34º 35' S and 40º 19' S. The area was divided in two zones: the northern, between 34º S-38º S, strongly influenced by the mixohaline waters of the Río de la Plata River estuary and the southern, between 38º S-41º S, that included the El Rincón coastal area. In each... |

We studied the circadian variations of the ionic composition ([Na+], [K+], [Cl-]), total CO2 ([tot CO2]), and protein concentration ([protein]) in the plasma and endolymph in the distal and proximal sides of the sacculus in the turbot Psetta maxima. Daily variations in total plasma calcium ([tot Ga]) were also recorded. Significant diurnal fluctuations occurred in most parameters and the spatial heterogeneity of the endolymph composition was maintained throughout a 24 h period. The main parameters implicated in otolith calcification, endolymph [tot CO2] and endolymph [protein], fluctuated diurnally, [tot CO2] was highest and [protein] lowest at night; the relative concentrations were reversed during the day. The inverse, alternating relationship of maximal... |

ABSTRACT The present research aimed to determine the fatty acid profile in the seed oil of cagaita fruits cultivated in Goiânia, state of Goiás, in 2013 and 2014 harvests. The study was carried out with fruits produced by cagaita trees cultivated in the field of the School of Agronomy, Federal University of Goiás (EA/UFG), Goiânia, GO, where, in 1998, 440 cagaita seedlings from different municipalities in Goiás were planted. Fruits were collected from plants with 16 years of age in full production stage. Cagaita seeds show in their fatty acid profile mostly linoleic acid, oleic acid and palmitic acid. There was no variation in fatty acids content present in seeds between years 2013 and 2014, assuming that there are no external influences such as weather,... |

Juvenile gilthead sea bream (initial body weight ca. 100 g) were reared in an indoor flow through marine water system for 1 year. Fish were fed two isoenergetic [19.2 kJ g−1 dry matter (DM)] and isoproteic (426 g kg−1 DM) diets either based on fish meal (diet FM) or on a mixture of plant protein sources (diet PP), replacing 75% of fish meal protein. The growth trial was conducted in duplicate, two tanks for each dietary treatment. Growth performance and feed utilization were registered. Fillet quality parameters were evaluated and sensory analyses on cooked fillet were performed. Both groups had similar weight gain and specific growth rates. Feed intake was higher in sea bream fed diet FM (0.48 versus 0.44), while feed efficiency and... |

ABSTRACT This study aims to evaluate the possibility to formulate low-sodium bicarbonate-marinated turkey breast meat. In total, 60 meat cuts (100 × 50 × 30mm) were divided into four treatments: B1 (0.5% sodium bicarbonate and 0% sodium chloride replacement), B2 (0.5% sodium bicarbonate and 15% sodium chloride replacement), B3 (0.5% sodium bicarbonate and 30% sodium chloride replacement), and B4 (0.5% sodium bicarbonate and 45% sodium chloride replacement). The results showed that sodium replacement up to 45% had no impact on texture (as represented by Allo-Kramer shear values) and water activity. After cooking, Group B1 exhibited the highest L* value (72.1) and the lowest b* (6.6) when compared to other groups. In conclusion, replacing sodium chloride... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of protected fat from palm oil on body weight and milk production and composition of lactating Lacaune ewes. Four treatments (0, 20, 40, and 60 g kg−1 as fed) of protected fat from palm oil were used to feed nine animals in each group. Isoproteic and isoenergetic diets were formulated and adjusted for each animal after milk weighing. Corn silage was used as roughage on the same proportion of concentrated to feed all animals. Milk samples were collected weekly for chemical analyses up to the seventh week of the lactation period and every other week after that until the end of the lactation period (182 days). Increased levels of protected fat in the diet of lactating ewes resulted in lower body... |

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) forage potential can be enhanced through its regrowth capacity and higher production in narrow rows. A field experiment was conducted in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico, during 2 growing seasons (2004 and 2005) to study the effects of plant height and row spacing on kenaf forage potential with multiple harvests. This study evaluated the effects of (1) 2 plant heights at cutting (1.0-1.2 m and 1.8-2.0 m) and (2) 4 inter row spacings (0.19, 0.38, 0.57 and 0.76 m) using a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized block design with 4 replications. Dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) yields, DM partitioning, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and CP concentrations were determined. Heights at cutting × row... |

ABSTRACT The prediction of metabolizable energy (ME) of meat and bone meal (MBM) for pigs is an interesting tool, however, used models to predict these values must be validated in order to garantee higher precision. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical and energetic composition of different types of MBM for pigs and to adjust and validate models to better predict the ME based on the chemical composition. Thirty-two barrows, averaging an initial weight of 26.75 ± 1.45 kg, were individually allotted in a randomized block design with eight treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of seven types of MBM that replaced 20% of the basal diet. A stepwise procedure was the statistical procedure used to adjust the prediction equations... |
